The dog, now named Pickle, was incredibly thin and weak. After a few attempts, we successfully removed the jar, and our rescuer swiftly took him to one of our trusted vets in Taipei.
So far, Sparkles’ vet bill has reached a total of NT$123,165 (£3,232 / US$3,996), but continues to go up every week due to ongoing treatment and tests. Last month, she was rushed to the hospital again due to severe dental bleeding and crashing kidneys, and spent two weeks in the ICU.
Eventually, our rescuer discovered the suffering stray cat lying in the shade under an air-conditioning fan, looking near death.
Er Bao’s wound was deep and infected, and it looked very painful. The friendly dog needed urgent medical attention, so we brought him to Dr. Huang at A-New Veterinary Hospital, who examined him and determined the necessary treatment.

With the trap set up on level ground, baited with pieces of hot dog, and tested to ensure in good working order, we retreated to allow the dog to feel less nervous and thus more likely to go in.
The more recently maimed stray kept her distance from our rescuers and disappeared into the trees when they tried to carefully approach her.
Painkillers mean he’s not suffering while awaiting surgery, thankfully, and he no longer has to struggle to find food on that fast and dangerous mountain road.
Apart from the difficult surgery needed on his leg, Cassidy was also suffering from dehydration, anaemia, and a tick-borne blood parasite.
