JJ, an avid athlete from Windsor, Ontario, is taking on an extraordinary challenge to support Skye. On July 28th, he will attempt to swim the distance of the English Channel crossing — about 37km — in a local pool in Taipei. Starting at sunrise and swimming until sunset, JJ’s original goal was to raise £1,000 towards Skye’s mounting but vital veterinary bills. But, because of the outpouring of support for JJ’s incredible efforts, we have decided to raise the target to £1,500.
This isn’t JJ’s first fundraising endeavour; earlier this year, he successfully ran around Taiwan to support another animal-rescue charity. His determination and passion for helping animals in need drive him to push his physical limits. By sponsoring JJ’s swim, you not only support his incredible journey but also provide critical funds for Skye’s life-saving treatment. ACT is the only registered charity performing animal rescue in northern Taiwan around the clock—and often in very difficult situations. As a result, we save the lives of animals who had almost no hope and give them the best life we can. Because the bulk of our expenses are in Taiwan, we are able to make funds go a lot further and help more animals in distress, meaning ACT is a great animal charity to donate to if you want your donation to make as much a difference as possible.
When a stray dog is hit by a car, an injured monkey is trapped in a tree, or a puppy is stuck in a drain, ACT goes to the rescue. If a kitten is heard crying from inside a wall down a filthy back alley, or a malnourished amputee like Sandy here needs emergency treatment, ACT won’t give up until they are rescued and receiving the best veterinary care available, no matter what situation or hour of day or night—nor how remote the location. It took 20 hours of driving, climbing, and hiking to get Sandy to safety.
Rescued as a 10-week-old pup in March 2013 along with her brothers and her mum, Beautiful, Skye’s journey has been one of resilience and love. Her mum had fallen victim to a poacher’s wire snare, losing her foot, which led our team to rescue the entire family. Skye, who has always been shy and nervous, found comfort in the arms of our founders, Sean and Judy, who decided to foster her and her mum.
Although very nervous and shy, Skye enjoys being hugged and never bites, even when very scared or unsure, and is great around Sean and Judy’s young kids and their disabled cat, RayRay. Although she prefers to keep her distance most of the time, when there’s a big thunderstorm or earthquake, Skye will always choose to seek security by jumping onto Sean and Judy’s bed and asking to be hugged. Our raw-fed dogs tend to stay healthy and active until 17 to 19 years of age, so Skye really does have a great future to enjoy.
